Join Linda, Peter, Gary, Byron, and Anthony for a scuba dive that's a little different from the usual dive charter. The 35 foot Kaimanu is Coast Guard certified to carry 18 passengers, however they find that larger groups in the water at the same location can/will alter marine life behavior.  Bubbles finds that taking smaller groups of 8 divers can impact an area a lot less obtrusively and they can still provide individual attention!  Trips are designed to be marine biology/ecology underwater tours and spend time in briefs/debriefs discussing what to look for, species as well as behaviors.

Kaimanu (Seabird) is a 35x9ft. custom built Radon dive boat. She is very stable, roomy, and fast. Getting in and out of the water from Kaimanu is very easy. She also has a dry shaded cuddy area forward, a fresh water camera rinse bin, a hot fresh water shower, and an on-board head. Kaimanu is powered by twin 260HP Cummins Turbo Diesels. In order to provide a high quality personalized tour to Kauai's best dive areas, charters are limited to small groups of certified divers only. All trips are guided marine biology oriented tours.

Bubbles schedules trips up to twice daily and once nightly. Location of departure depends upon which side of the island has the best water conditions and/or the best proximity to particular dive sights. Port Allen Small Boat Harbor on the south shore is the most common year round departure point. Divers should check in by phone upon arrival for directions to departure locations.

Their Morning Dive is a 4 1/2 hour trip. They meet at 7:30am and are back to the harbor around 12:00pm. The Afternoon Dive is also a 4 1/2 hour trip meeting at 12:30pm and returning at about 5:00pm. Both trips are essentially the same although dive sites for each trip may differ depending on conditions. Morning and afternoon charters are 2 tanks at 2 different locations. Both are guided eco-tours catering to marine ecology enthusiasts. They will try to satisfy dive site requests as well as critter requests.

Dive includes: tanks, weights, dive computer, snacks, drinks, and an underwater guide to Kauai's aquatic backyard. If you wish to use a dive light, great! There are many habitats inside of habitats to see. There is no charge for lights, but please try to request them in advance. They accept Mastercard, Visa, travelers check, personal check, and cash.

They do cater to divers, however if space permits, riders/snorklers are welcome on the boat. Please remember that sea conditions often may not be suitable for those non-divers susceptible to sea sickness. Reservations are required, and are space available.

Night Dives on Kauai are awesome! Their twilight/night dives are a four and a half hour trip, meeting at 4:30 pm. You get one of the brightest lights on the market and they guarantee a critter filled dive. Hunting octopi, mating nudibranchs, pulsating pelagics - do any of these sound interesting to you? Well, this is a trip that begins when our sea creatures really come alive! These dives will allow you to see Kauai's backyard biota change from day to night before your very eyes.

Important Info you Need To Know

Lehua Crater (aka Lehua Rock) is located just off the northern tip of Niihau. Via a 2 hr. rough water boat ride
from Kauai, advanced scuba divers are treated to a watery world unlike any other in the State of Hawaii.
Lehua Crater - Courtesy of Bubbles - Photo By Carol MarshTake a swim through the WILD SIDE, and dive Niihau & Lehua Rock (Crater). This all day trip departs either at 7 am from Pt. Allen or at 6:30 am from Kikiaola Harbor (Kekaha). It is a 3 tank trip for experienced adventuresome divers to the forbidden island 25 miles west of Kauai. This trip involves a major open ocean channel crossing between islands and the ride home is usually rough going. It takes approximately 1 1/2 hour to get there, with the return taking about 2 hours. People with a tendency towards sea sickness should consider taking medication. People with bad backs or physical restrictions should consider diving with us around Kauai. Divers should be in good physical condition and should be comfortable diving on vertical drop-offs, huge underwater caverns, in possible choppy surface conditions, significant currents, as well as sharing water space with resident sharks. Many sites do not lend themselves for dropping an anchor. Divers need to be comfortable descending, ascending, and performing safety stops without an anchor line. Niihau is exciting, excellent, world class diving, but it is not for everybody due to the conditions and the type of diving. Bubbles Below began running the first regularly scheduled Niihau trips in 1984. This trip is offered twice weekly (Wed./Sat.) in the summer and on request during the rest of the year. Dive includes tanks, weights, computer, a complete lunch buffet, drinks, and a marine guide to the undersea world of Niihau.  Nitrox is available at an additional cost per bottle - cert required.

Shore Dives since 2002 /Instruction ~ Private Dives
Discover Scuba is an introductory diving course designed to open up a window in to a whole new amazing world of diving for you.  A short briefing on the shore and you’ll be blowing bubbles with one of their instructors encountering countless marine critters on an unforgettable underwater tour.  Rusty?
Refresher dives are a perfect way to ease yourself back into the water before taking a boat trip if you’ve been out of the water for a while.  Refreshers cater to each individual’s needs and can include detailed reviews of safe diving practices, equipment, diving techniques, etc.  Once back in the water their instructors are happy to work with you on any skills or techniques you desire prior to beginning an underwater tour.   They also offer a full range of certification courses that will also be customized to a divers needs.  Open Water certification is typically 3-4 mornings in length.  Divers completing their academics and pool work prior to arrival can complete a “referral.”  Referrals are generally done over two mornings and include 4 dives.  Certification classes are only done in small private groups to ensure the highest quality of instruction and the most comfort and enjoyment for our divers.  Adventure Diver (formally Advanced Open Water) certification is also available for certified divers looking to expand their diving knowledge into other areas.  Marine ecology tours for certified divers include detailed briefings that are both marine life and site specific.  Prior to “getting wet” your guide will show you photos of numerous marine critters you can expect to see on your dive, as well as explaining some of the amazing behaviors you are sure to see.    All shore dives and instruction classes include beverages, snacks, fresh water shower, towels.
Bubbles People Below
Linda Marsh (Captain/Instructor/Divemaster) of Bubbles Below has been serving divers on Kauai since 1983.  A perpetual student, Linda wanted the charters to be educational, with a flare in adventure. Having instructed divers since 1977, she now focuses on teaching advanced diving skills and teaching about the marine environment on all boat dives. She holds a U.S. Coast Guard Captains license, has a BS in Education, is a NAUI Course Director, a PADI Master Scuba Diver Trainer, and has experience as a supervisor and inside tender at the Hyperbaric Recompression Chamber. Drift diving is one of her favorite ways to dive, as you can quietly change your environment without necessarily intruding upon it.  Through observation, a diver can learn the way species interact with each other as well as  depend on each other for balance in the overall ecological system.

She finds that many divers like an anchor line to ascend up at the end of the dive.  Seeing the damage of Hurricane Iwa in 1982 and then Hurricane Iniki  in 1992, Linda started a moorings project for Kauai as a legacy to the children who would dive here.  But moorings are still restrictive on where divers can go,  so over the years they developed a way to call for the boat, and anchor from the bottom up!  You can drift dive and still place the anchor gently on the bottom, thus not breaking any coral.  Being environmentally conscious is not just lip service, it’s a way of living and diving!

Linda started diving as a child and has been diving ever since.  Her degree in education came from the University of Michigan and she still uses that education to inform divers about the marine environment.  A NAUI/PADI instructor since 1976 and holding a 100 ton Captains rating, she has been cruising Kauai’s waters since 1980 looking for dive sites that are unique habitats and fun to dive.

Formally Linda Bail, recently divorced, now uses her maiden name of Marsh.  She invites you to come and dive with Bubbles Below, and meet their conscientious crew, fabulous fishes, and incredible invertebrates of Kauai Hawaii !

Byron Vance (PADI Instructor/Divemaster), is a Canadian by heart, humor, and origin.  He started diving in Lake Mead Nevada in 1985, and fell in love with the sport.  In Southern California he met up with nudibranchs and flatworms whose colors dazzled him and  led him to Kauai ’s diving doorstep by 1986.   Tho he loves movies and hiking Kauai’s trails he  is a great critter finder and would much rather be seeking an illusive frogfish than be doing just about anything else.  The cost of living in paradise catalyzed him to become an EMT in 1992 and as strong as he is, became a real asset to the community of Kauai .  Big Byron, also known as “Tiny, ” picked up an engine block the other day so we could get better traction with the truck.  Next time, I think he should just pick up the truck!  He became a Captain in 1991, but its difficult to get him out of the ocean as he is so at home in this environment.  Byron is a great communicator with some good jokes, who really enjoys sharing the underwater world with other divers.  Divers speak a common language, and Byron speaks it proficiently.  He is the kind of divemaster who will help the young, inexperienced, or intimidated, and will rock with the hardcore divers all on the same dive with a gentle hand, an encouraging smile, and a hardy belly laugh.  Come and enjoy the dive with “Gentle Byron”.
Peter Ricciardi (Captain/Divemaster) grew up on Kauai after transplanting from the mainland with his parents at the age of 4. His father started the second dive shop on the island in 1976 named Aquatics Kauai and was a major player in the dive industry here for 15 years. Of course, young Peter was exposed to the business at an early age. He was swimming , snorkeling, surfing and eventually scuba certified at 12 years old. You might say Peter was born to be in the scuba trade. Besides piloting boats and diving, his other interests are also active outdoor activities to include golf, basketball, hiking, beach volleyball and sports in general. Peter still calls Kauai home after all these years because "from the mountains to the ocean, there is such a wide selection of activities to choose from here. The people of Kauai also have a generally honest and friendly approach to life."
Gary Case (Captain/Divemaster) is born and raised in Hawaii with a lifelong bond with the ocean. With a father who captained many a vessels in the State as he grew up, Gary naturally took to the water. He is an avid diver, kayaker, surfer, fisherman and boater with a collection of some 25 different ocean crafts to include hand/surfboards, windsurfers, skis, kayaks and boats. Scuba certification came in 1977 followed by a Divemaster and USCG Captain rating in 1988. Besides Hawaii, Gary has explored the waters of Costa Rica, Bali, and Canada but Kauai is definitely home. In his words- "I've always lived by the sea and love just hanging out by the ocean. I'm not looking for a big fortune, just some peace of mind away from the crowds." Few people can claim to have as many hours in and around Hawaiian waters as Gary.

Anthony Kuntz, (PADI Instructor/Divemaster) grew up in Michigan , and began diving in San Diego in 1992.  Diving the shores of La Jolla and the island of Catalina became his weekend home.  During the summers he would make his annual pilgrimages to the shores of Hawaii to expand his growing knowledge and love for the sport.  His serious passion led him to become a dynamite PADI instructor in 1999 with Laura Scott in Maui .  Teaching people to dive comfortably and safely while sharing his love for diving became paramount in his priorities.  Anthony’s diving career began with Extended Horizons over in Maui   where he became one of their divemasters for Lanai , Molokai , and West Maui .  Leading night dives at Maui ’s Black Rock was one of his favorite dives.  His passion for adventure diving kept bringing him back to Bubbles Below for Niihau charters year after year and finally led to his moving over to become part of Bubbles Below Scuba Charters’ staff.  He offers shore dives ranging from guiding service, refreshers, introductory dives to rescue courses.  He is also offering a photo/video service on the boat, when he is not divemastering off of Kaimanu.  You can be sure that his growing passion for the underwater world will rub off on you!
Ken Bail (Captain/Instructor/Divemaster) started the Bubbles Below diving experience with Linda in 1983 knows every facet of diving as well as all the dive sites well.  Though he is moving on with his interests, he maintains a relationship with Bubbles Below as the ultimate “fall guy” as he can do anything, and will fill in from time to time.  These guest appearances are always fun for divers as well as crew because he brings with him a strong, quiet sense of confidence and experience.
Michael Peth (Divemaster/Master Diver/Webmaster) resides in Northern California and has hundreds of dry suit dives in Monterey and many more wet suit dives in both cold and tropical environments.  He is a scuba diver, free diver, skier,  photographer (including underwater), kayaker, and fisherman.  Included in his many Master Diver specialties are certifications as an Underwater Naturalist, Dry Suit, Peak Buoyancy, Underwater Propulsion Vehicle,  and Nitrox Diver.  Michael has many international dives to his credit including many cold water locations. "Just because the water's cold doesn't mean that it's not a beautiful and rich ecosystem." His most memorable diving experience however was top-side when he spent two hours with Carl Brashear (Navy Master Diver) the basis of the movie "Men Of Honor".  Michael assists a PADI Master Scuba Diver Instructor and has also performed/taught many scuba refresher/local diving/certified free diving sessions.  In addition to his diving he is a Sr. Projects Director for Oracle Corporation. Michael has been coming to Kauai for over 26 years and intends to make Kauai his home. You'll probably run across him on the Kaimanu from time to time.  Michaeal also maintains Bubbles website.

Mahalos-Feedback:  Lillikoi,  Our trip to Kauai was unforgettable.  I had an amazing time and I can't thank you enough for all your help in planning our trip.  Bubbles is a GREAT dive operator. They took the time to give a thorough dive briefing, including a description of local fish, their behavior, habitat, etc.  The dive master was excellent at showing us various critters, and keeping track of the all the divers, (only 3 of us) and..... here's the best part, we saw humpback whales on the dive. I can't wait to return. I'll be recommending your site and services to anyone that will stand still long enough to listen. You are what the phrase "Aloha Spirit" refers to. Your aloha spirit rings out all the way to the mainland.  Mahalo, Jonine Riley

Lilikoi,   I enjoyed the dives very much.  Bubbles is a good outfit for experienced divers - not too much hand holding, and very knowledgeable dive masters.  I will use them again next time I'm in Kauai.      Jeff H. ~ May 12, 2002
