Keala serves as a crew member aboard the Polynesian
Voyaging Society's Hokule'a, "a performance-accurate full-scale replica
of a wa? a kaulua, a Polynesian double-hulled voyaging canoe."*
"Each of my creations are deep, personal
expressions of what I feel. To understand my art is to understand
the very unique culture I represent. I draw to express words that
do not exist.
My drawings are my voice."

Art of Steve Davis

Steve Davis was born in Long Beach, California on
August 29, 1957. His parents encouraged his creativity, and he started
his artistic education at age 10. From an early age he felt a connection
to nature, especially to the ocean that bordered his home. His early closeness
to nature is now apparent in his beautiful, lusciously realistic paintings
of the natural world. Even at this young age, his artistic talent was already
apparent.
While in high school, he was already attending
college art classes. At 18, he decided to seriouly pursue a career as an
artist. Eventually, he moved to Hawaii, to the islands that now inspire
his art so much.
His paintings are displayed in some of the finest
galleries in Hawaii, California, Arizona and New Mexico. He uses several
techniques with style and grace, including watercolors, acrylics and oils.
Education
1976 - El Camino Jr. College (design and watercolor)
1977 - Art Center College of Design of Los Angeles
(drawing and painting)
1984/1985 - Northern Arizona University (painting
& monotype)
1986 - Arizona State University (printmaking &
monotype)
Steve has been a special friend for all the years
I have lived on the Garden Island. I marvel at his ability to capture
the beauty of Kauai and her people in his artwork. Lilikoi

Wahine O Kekaha
An ethereal, almost angelic Hawaiian woman, her
head crowned by a plumeria lei, sits on a white sand beach in this painting.
A calm sea washes behind her and violet-grey clouds float in the distance,
giving a real sense of actually being there, sitting next to this mysterious
woman. |
|
Kalalau
This mystical view of Kauai's famous Kalalau valley
has captured the hearts of countless visitors. |
|
Ho'olewa ~ (Hula Hips)
Ho'olewa, meaning to float or sway, describes a
beautiful hula dancer poised gracefully in front of Waimea Canyon. Sacred
Hawaiian Ti leaves adorn her waist as she looks toward into the almost
Southwestern colors of the Canyon. |
|
Waimea Canyon
Different than most of Steve Davis' paintings in
that it is acrylic on board as opposed to watercolor, this early morning
view of what Mark Twain called "The Grand Canyon of the Pacific" is filled
with the colors and magic of Kauai. |

| Na Pali Coast ... is a dreamy, yet photorealistic,
view of one of Steve Davis' favorite trails along the beautiful Na Pali
coast. |
| The Healer ... Kauai Rainforest |
| Heliconia ... This painting seems more
like a portrait of a flower than the typical Hawaiian floral painting.
Green and red contrast beautifully and light glints off the leaves in a
remarkable view of this rainforest flower. |

Island drama and beauty unfold in the paintings of artist
Penny Nichols. Well known for her lifelike portraits and Hawaiian
floral and landscape paintings, this Oahu native has made her home on the
Garden Island of Kauai since 1974.
Nichols credits her mother, well known Honolulu artist
Dorothy Teele Buscemi, with giving her the desire to pursue a career in
art. "I grew up in an art gallery, surrounded by artists. It
was a very rich learning environment," she says.
Dividing her time between painting and teaching - adult
classes, children's classes, as well as private students - Nichols enjoys
her busy schedule. Her philosophy is simple. "I strive to paint
with honesty those things which move me. I try to capture the particular
light or mood that first caught my eye. Hawaii abounds with wonderful
subject matter. Interpreting the subject in a unique and personal
way is my goal."
The art of Penny Nichols hangs in homes and offices throughout
Hawaii, and across the mainland and Europe.
Penny is also a special friend and a gifted artist and
teacher who has generously shared her talent with my own children for many,
years on Kauai. For this we will be eternally grateful.
