You'll find that Kauai does have a bit of traffic, generally concentrated in the Lihue and Kapaa areas, so be patient and allow an extra 15 minutes or so to your plans during the morning school and late afternoon rush hours. There is only one main highway on Kauai shaped in the form of a horseshoe. The road does not circle around the entire island. You would be looking at approximately 2 hours (barring traffic) to get from one end of the island to the other. The miles and times are as accurate as I was able to find.
Please also be aware of the Contra Flow lanes heading into Lihue from the North & East sides of the island, beginning at the Coconut Plantation Marketplace end of the Kapaa By Pass Road heading towards the Wailua Bridge all the way into the Lihue Airport. The heaviest traffic is directed into 2 lanes during the early morning rush hours from both ends of the island. They begin laying the bright orange cones from 4:30 am and the cones are removed by 9:00 am on Mondays through Fridays. Caution is advised for those making a left turn from the Radisson Resort heading for Lihue. There is a coned off storage lane that allows you to merge into flowing traffic. If you are making a right hand turn heading into Kapaa Town, you must merge right into flowing traffic.
I would highly recommend that you ask for information from your hotel or resort on the various ByPass Roads (in Kapaa, Lihue, & Koloa) on Kauai that can also shorten your commute times to your various activities. The Kapaa ByPass avoids Kapaa Town and the Lihue ByPass takes you from Kipu to Nawiliwili. Both of these come under State jurisdiction, whereas the mini Koloa ByPass Road is under County jurisdiction and bypasses Koloa Town.
You will find that the majority of drivers are exceptionally courteous on the Garden Island. Drive safely, always wear your seat belts and observe the speed limits.
