Kauai Map
Map Courtesy of the Kauai Underground Guide
This page was created for all of my viewers who requested a simple map of Kauai.  It will give you the perspective you need in planning for your adventures on the Garden Island.  The map is shared by the "Kauai Underground Guide" and the generosity of Author Lenore Horowitz.  I have added more text to show the many little towns you will want to explore.

You'll find that Kauai does have a bit of traffic, generally concentrated in the Lihue and Kapaa areas, so be patient and allow an extra 15 minutes or so to your plans during the morning school and late afternoon rush hours.  There is only one main highway on Kauai shaped in the form of a horseshoe.  The road does not circle around the entire island.  You would be looking at approximately 2 hours (barring traffic) to get from one end of the island to the other.  The miles and times are as accurate as I was able to find. Most Speed Limits are now set at 40 miles per hour so you will have to be extremely patient.
Please also be aware of the Contra Flow lanes heading into Lihue from the North & East sides of the island, beginning at the Coconut Plantation Marketplace end of the Kapaa By Pass Road heading towards the Wailua Bridge all the way into the Lihue Airport.  The heaviest traffic is directed into 2 lanes during the early morning rush hours from both ends of the island.  They begin laying the bright orange cones from 4:30 am and the cones are removed by 9:00 am on Mondays through Fridays.  Caution is advised for those making a left turn from the Radisson Resort heading for Lihue.  There is a coned off storage lane that allows you to merge into flowing traffic.  If you are making a right hand turn heading into Kapaa Town, you must merge right into flowing traffic.
I would highly recommend that you ask for information from your hotel or resort on the various ByPass Roads (in Kapaa, Lihue, & Koloa) on Kauai that can also shorten your commute times to your various activities.  The Kapaa ByPass avoids Kapaa Town and the Lihue ByPass takes you from Kipu to Nawiliwili.  Both of these come under State jurisdiction, whereas the mini Koloa ByPass Road is under County jurisdiction and bypasses Koloa Town.
Rental Car Tips
Dependent on your season of travel, you may check with any rental agency to see if they offer a special walk up rate.  I highly recommend a rental car for the island of Kauai, our island may be tiny but keep in mind we only have one main road (in the shape of a horseshoe & you can't go directly from the West to the North).  As far as transportation to and from Milolii State Park or Kalalau Valley by boat or raft (which has been done in previous years by some vendors), it is no longer allowed by the state.  A pick up and drop off by taxi is costly may be your only option to get to the trail head in Haena.

* Here's the scoop on taxi fares not including tip.  Rates are county regulated per mile these days (subject to change without notice).  Start Up is $3.00 then about $3.00 per mile and this has not changed since 2006. Make sure that your taxi turns on the meter so you can see your costs. Ask them to update you on this cost.

Some helpful info for you to digest (Cost from Lihue Airport each way):
Wailua River $25
Kapaa $32
Poipu is running about approximately $49
Port Allen $58
Waimea $72
(Nawiliwili Pier to Hanamaulu ea way is about $15-16- Kapaa to Hanamaulu is roughly about $20 ea way so you can guesstimate $30-32? on a round trip to these areas).
Please call directly for a cab, some may also have websites and email addresses that they can relay to you. I have only Carol's email added for Kauai Taxi Co.
(She was kind enough to take the time to relay all this to me for you today 02/12/12 ... Mahalo Carol!)
This free ad is not updated unless they update me. Mahalo for your kind understanding.
* You can look forward to a dedicated page for Taxi Cabs as soon as Lilikoi has time to build it. Hope all the above is helpful to you.

You will find that the majority of drivers are exceptionally courteous on the Garden Island.  Drive safely, always wear your seat belts and observe the speed limits.
