Extraordinary Teacher, Author, Performer

Slack Key (kiho alu) is a special type of guitar playing uniquely Hawaiian. This beautiful music expresses love for magical island people and places. It evokes delicate images of the surf on wet sand, a waterfall ... a misty valley, a sacred chant. Sometimes the music will take you back somewhere long ago, or to a place you love so dearly.
Hal's been playing weddings for 16 years. When he's not at a wedding, he's usually teaching guitar or ukulele, cooking or hanging at the beach.Mr. Kinnaman is an accomplished guitarist who studied slack key with Raymond Kane, world renowned as one of Hawaii's living treasures and Kenny Rapozo, both Hawaii born musicians.  Kenny Rapozo is a respected musician who was born, raised, and also resides on the Garden Island.  Raymond Leialoha Patterson was instrumental in introducing Hal to the beautiful art of kiho alu.
Hal has taught guitar at Cypress Community College and at Saddleback College in California. He has taught Slack Key in the State of Hawaii educational system in 1978 and since 1988 has been teaching Slack Key and classical guitar at the Kauai Community College and is currently a private instructor. Hal has performed throughout the mainland US and in Fiji.
Note that Hal's Instructional Books and Cassettes are NO LONGER in circulation.  Private Instruction is available when you are on island.  Phone (808) 821-1000 or Email all requests (for private lessons, music for wedding or special celebrations) c/o Lilikoi to lilikoi@trykauai.com

"What really made our vacation, though, was the special evening you helped me organize for my parent's 44th wedding anniversary.  You suggested a place to eat (the Plantation Gardens), arranged for us to use the private dining room at no charge, ordered leis for both my Mom and Dad, ordered a personalized cake and even arranged for authentic Hawaiian entertainment.  Hal Kinnaman was a delight and provided my family with an evening they will never forget.  It is very hard to impress my parents, but impress them we did!!"
