Keep in mind that permits for camping can be applied for before your trip to Kauai and only up to a year in advance.  They are also limited to a certain number per month.  You may not be able to get one if they are sold out of them.  Also to hike beyond the 2.5 miles into Hanakapi'ai Falls, you will be required to have a hiking permit.

My expertise is really with booking activities but here is some help:

There are many businesses that rent gear and/or sell them:

Pedal & Paddle (808) 826-9069 or Kayak Kauai (808) 826-9844 (Both on North Shore)

A lot of shops carry various backpacking and /or camping equipment but I have not gotten the okay to publish their numbers on my site ... but here are the names of various other businesses you can easily do a phone search for on your own:

Waipouli Variety in Kapaa
Cost U Less in Kapaa also has sleeping bags & also other camping needs ... kind of like a Costco
Walmart in Lihue
K Mart also in Lihue

Good Luck ... Have Fun & Stay Safe.
Again, Our expertise is primarily with guided activities.  We appreciate any visitor interested in our precious Garden Island!  I have devoted 2 separate pages to Camping & Hiking to keep you informed and safe while you are visiting with us.
Click Here for Info on:  Hiking or Camping
Unfortunately, other than renting a car, your options for public transport are next to nothing.  The Kauai Bus also is very restrictive for bags other than carry on type like the airlines.  They do not accept backpacks that are oversized.

Rental Car Tips
Dependent on your season of travel, you may check with any rental agency to see if they offer a special walk up rate.  I highly recommend a rental car for the island of Kauai, our island may be tiny but keep in mind we only have one main road (in the shape of a horseshoe & you can't go directly from the West to the North).  As far as transportation to and from Milolii State Park or Kalalau Valley by boat or raft (which has been done in previous years by some vendors), it is no longer allowed by the state.  A pick up and drop off by taxi is costly may be your only option to get to the trail head in Haena.

Here is a free phone directory of Taxi Cabs on Kauai (subject to change without my knowledge). Please call on your own for a quote:

* Here's the scoop on taxi fares not including tip.  Rates are county regulated at $3.50 a mile these days (subject to change without notice as it is difficult for me to keep up with these updates - this update dated 03/21/08) .  Make sure that your taxi turns on the meter so you can see your costs. Lihue to Poipu is running about $49-50 each way.

Be Prepared with Camping & Landing Permits

A Story & Seasonal Tips ... FYI
The old days are long gone.  I remember when Capt. Zodiac used to drop and pick people up for $20 each.  Back in 1976, my girlfriend and I hiked into Kalalau in November (which is a high surf season on the North Shore) just before Thanksgiving, the weather became stormy and the only way out in time for dinner was to Zodiac out.  With the surf conditions the way they were, even that was risky.  Please consider that you will need to base your decisions on the time of the year that you would want to do this adventure, your safety for you &/or your family, if you do have young children.  Of, course Kauai's weather is still very unpredictable.  Mother Nature likes to play with us!

Deeply sorry for all the news above that may disappoint you & hinder your dreams. This page was developed to protect, advise, inform, & keep our visitors safe.

This original guidebook and best-selling since 1980, now has more than 175,000 copies in print.  Readers enjoy detailed beach descriptions geared to what people of all ages can do, restaurant reviews with price information as well as recommended menu choices, and consumer oriented information about adventuring on Kauai.  Travel & Leisure calls it 'the bible' for Kauai!  A portion of the sales price is donated to charities that benefit Kauai's children.

The book is unique in its free CD of beautiful Hawaiian music by Keali'i Reichel (worth the price of the book alone) and its commitment to helping children's charities on Kauai.

Note:  While the "Kauai Ultimate Guide Book" is of value to visitors, please note, currently there are many other excellent publications available for researching your visite to Kauai.  From an activity agent's perspective, I was disappointed to read their opinion in the 4th Edition on activity brokers and booths in general.  Commissions for our services vary greatly and it is not always the case that calling the individual vendors will save you money.  On behalf of all those agents out on the streets, at the desks, in the booths, and concierges ... please understand the real truth is that those individual agents only benefit from a very small fraction of commissions from the companies that they work for and often survive solely on commissions with no hourly wage.  Selling activities is a fiercely competitive industry, and you should proceed with caution :-).  I created my personal web site to help visitors to familiarize themselves with our Garden Island prior to their arrival.  My expertise is providing you with all the knowledge you need to create a complete itinerary for all your activities while visiting Kauai and secure them before you arrive.  I provide a personalized service and no extra fees are attached.  There is a lot of time and thought spent on both sides to create the vacation of your dreams that fits into your budget.  Mahalo for your kind consideration in allowing me to assist you with any of your activity bookings.

Good Luck to you, stay safe and have a life changing adventure in paradise!
Many popular activities are sold out days, weeks, or very often months in advance year around. Mahalo Nui Loa ... There are NO added fees & No Deposits required for booking assistance.
