| Keep
in mind that permits for camping can be applied for before your trip to
Kauai and only up to a year in advance. They are also limited to
a certain number per month. You may not be able to get one if they
are sold out of them. Also to hike beyond the 2.5 miles into Hanakapi'ai
Falls, you will be required to have a hiking permit.

| Unfortunately, other than renting a car, your options for public transport are next to nothing. The Kauai Bus also is very restrictive for bags other than carry on type like the airlines. They do not accept backpacks that are oversized. |

* Here's the scoop on taxi fares not including tip. Rates are county regulated per mile these days (subject to change without notice). Make sure that your taxi turns on the meter so you can see your costs. Lihue to Poipu is running about $50-60 each way? Ask them to update you on this cost. (Nawiliwili Pier to Hanamaulu ea way is about $18 - Kapaa to Hanamaulu is roughly about $20 ea way so you can guesstimate $50-60? on a round trip to these areas). Note: While the "Kauai Ultimate Guide Book" is of value to visitors, please note, currently there are many other excellent publications available for researching your visite to Kauai. From an activity agent's perspective, I was disappointed to read their opinion in the 4th Edition on activity brokers and booths in general. Commissions for our services vary greatly and it is not always the case that calling the individual vendors will save you money. On behalf of all those agents out on the streets, at the desks, in the booths, and concierges ... please understand the real truth is that those individual agents only benefit from a very small fraction of commissions from the companies that they work for and often survive solely on commissions with no hourly wage. Selling activities is a fiercely competitive industry, and you should proceed with caution :-).
